Spray Foam Insulation Cost in Calgary
What does spray foam insulation cost in Calgary? The honest answer: it depends on the foam type, the depth required, and how much area you are covering.
What Drives the Price
- Foam type: open cell is the economical option, closed cell the premium one
- Depth: code requirements and your target R-value set the thickness
- Area and access: attics, walls, rim joists and crawl spaces each prep differently
- Prep work: removal of old insulation, masking and ventilation
Cost Versus Payback
Spray foam costs more up front than batts or blown-in material, and pays the difference back through lower heating bills, because it air seals while it insulates. In a heating climate like Calgary the payback is strongest in the attic and the rim joists, where air leakage is worst. What Actually Drives the Number
Four things move a spray foam quote more than anything else: the area being covered, the installed thickness required, which product the assembly needs, and how hard the space is to work in. A wide open attic with good access is straightforward. A tight crawl area, a space full of ductwork, or a roof line with complicated framing takes longer for the same square footage. Anyone quoting without seeing the space is guessing at three of those four.
Why Closed Cell Costs More Than Open Cell
Closed cell uses more material per unit of volume, is denser, and delivers a higher R-value per inch along with vapour control and added rigidity. Open cell expands much further from the same quantity of material, which makes it cheaper to fill a given cavity. The two are not interchangeable, so the honest comparison is not price per board foot but which one the assembly actually requires.
Removal Is a Separate Line, and It Should Be
Where existing insulation has to come out first, that is slow dirty work and it is the easiest item to bury inside a larger number. It should appear as its own line so you can see what the clean-out costs against what the new insulation costs. If the existing material is sound and can stay, a contractor with nothing to hide will tell you that rather than quoting the clean-out anyway.
Why We Will Not Quote Over the Phone
A number given without seeing the building is a number that changes later, and changing a price after the work has started is how these jobs go wrong. We measure what is there, look at the access and the assembly, and put the product, the thickness and the covered areas in writing before anything begins. The estimate is free and the scope is yours to compare against anyone else's.
Questions
Common questions
What decides the price of spray foam?
Foam type, installed depth, the area covered and prep work. Every estimate itemizes all four.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. Free, written and itemized before any work begins.
Open-cell or closed-cell, which costs more?
Closed-cell costs more per board foot and delivers a higher R-value per inch plus a moisture barrier; open-cell covers more area per dollar.
